Enjoy this list of LGBTQIA+ media selected by Alphabet Soup teens, including their quotes describing why they love these TV shows, movies, podcasts, YouTubers, and video games!

Alphabet Soup is an inclusive, safe, (now virtual) hangout where LGBTQ+ teens and teen allies can explore identity through conversations, gaming, casual activities, and more! The group meets Wednesdays at 4pm. See our Events page for more details on attending one of our events.

This list includes teen and adult titles. Use your personal discretion in deciding which are appropriate for you, and feel free to ask for more recommendations on a particular topic through our contact page.

Alphabet Soup's Favorite LGBTQ+ TV Shows

Picture
Steven Universe (TV-PG)
DVD j Steven Universe
There is an alien race in the show that are gender ambiguous, but all present femininely so all of the relationships have queer overtones.

Picture
Adventure Time (TV-PG)
DVD j Adventur
Takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting, but feels more fantastical. It tackles concepts and issues that are mature, but in a way that is accessible for younger audiences.

Picture
Supernatural (TV-14)
Character: Charlie
Charlie is awesome. She isn’t fetishized for her sexuality and is written very well. In Pop Culture, she’s the best representation of how people actually are.

Picture
The Umbrella Academy (TV+14)
There are 2 characters, one who is a flamboyant gay guy and a girl whose sexuality isn’t what makes her character, but is something that is just part of who she is.

Alphabet Soup's Favorite Movies

Picture
Moonlight (R)
DVD MOVIE Moonligh
Moonlight follows the main character growing up. Instead of being like a slice of queer experience, it shows his whole life.

Picture
Milk (R)
DVD MOVIE Milk
This movie follows the story of one of the first openly gay politicians. It shows his life and his experiences leading up to his place in politics.

Picture
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (PG-13)
DVD MOVIE Perks of
I like how this movie covers complex topics, without making it obvious to the person watching it. It shows queer representation in many different lights - how some days you are proud, and sometimes you are ashamed. It really captures the life of real LGBTQ+ teens.

Picture
Hairspray (not the musical version!) (PG)
DVD MOVIE Hairspra
Divine was my first introduction to being queer. She does the whole performance in drag. There is a great sense of humor and the ability to make jokes about things that are normally seen as serious. It influenced how I react to people reacting to me. Laughing it off, as opposed to getting upset or angry. Rather than leaning into the stereotypes they throw at me.

Alphabet Soup's Favorite LGBTQ+ Podcasts

Picture
LGBTQ&A (Explicit)
Interviews with queer people and their experiences as well as what they’re doing. So if you’re interested in what famous queer people are doing, it’s a great place to learn.

Alphabet Soup's Favorite YouTubers

Picture
The Miles Chronicles (Miles Mckenna)
Does a lot of informative videos about queer history. Openly talks about his experience as a trans guy in a not very welcoming area.

Picture
The Try Guys
Eugene is queer and is an openly gay man on the internet. Overall the channel is entertaining and the coming out video he did makes it so it’s as artistic as possible.

Picture
Jessie Paege
Jessie is similar to Miles as she does educational videos. She’s an openly bisexual woman who talks about her experiences and shares parts of her life.

Picture
Juno Birch
Juno is a trans woman whose videos are mostly about her playing Sims. They are super funny and she’ll do make up tutorials where she tries to look like Sims characters.

Alphabet Soup's Favorite Video Games

Picture
The Sims (T-Teen)
You can make your character attracted to whoever you want them to be attracted to. It’s an easy way to create your own representation when you don’t find it in the media elsewhere. You can dress your character however you want.

Picture
Undertale (E-Everyone)
A very wholesome game where the protagonist that you play doesn’t have a specific gender. So they’re like non-binary which is really cool.

Picture
Life is Strange (M-Mature)
Two gays, very nice - Alex
